Connects your VS Code to your instructor's AI Feedback dashboard so you can get timely, personalized help while you code. It streams your coding activity to the central server, runs the instructor's classifiers against your code, and shows AI-generated feedback you can reply to in a chat panel.

Works in both desktop VS Code and web VS Code (vscode.dev).

What it does

  • Shares your progress with the instructor's dashboard as you edit (file contents + edit activity).
  • Runs classifiers on your code. The instructor defines checks ("classifiers") describing code patterns to look for. On desktop these run locally on your machine; in web VS Code they run on the server. Either way you see the result.
  • AI Feedback conversation. When the instructor sends feedback, it appears in a chat panel and you can reply to keep the conversation going.

The AI Feedback panels

Open the AI Feedback icon in the Activity Bar to find two views:

  • Classifiers — which classifiers are currently running on your code and whether each one matches (Match / No match / Checking / Error).
  • Conversation — feedback from the instructor/AI tutor, with a box to reply.

Settings

  • student-extension.serverUrl — URL of the central server. Defaults to your course's deployed server; change it only if instructed.
  • student-extension.pythonPathDesktop only. Python 3 interpreter used to run classifiers locally. Set an absolute path (e.g. /usr/bin/python3) if python3 isn't found on your PATH. Ignored in web VS Code.

Requirements

  • Desktop: Python 3 available (used to evaluate classifiers locally). If it isn't found, the Classifiers panel shows an error explaining how to set the interpreter path.
  • Web (vscode.dev): no local requirements — classification runs on the server.

Privacy

This extension sends your code and editing activity to the course's central server so your instructor can provide feedback. Only install it for courses that ask you to.
