Create web-optimized images and thumbnails without leaving VS Code.

Right-click images in the Explorer, open the crop editor, and make edits — ideal for docs, READMEs, and front-end assets.

Features

  • Resize thumbnails — Set width (and optional height); outputs go to a configurable sibling folder (default: thumbnails/).
  • Crop then resize — Open the Media Editor view, adjust a crop box, set output dimensions, and export in one step.
  • Sensible defaults — Optional avoid upscale so small sources are not blown up past their real pixels.

Supported formats

.png, .jpg, .jpeg, .webp, .avif

Quick start

  1. Install Media Editor from the Visual Studio Code Marketplace.
  2. In the Explorer, right-click an image.
  3. Choose Media Editor: Create Thumbnail or use the crop flow from the command palette.

Configure defaults under Settings → Extensions → Media Editor (output folder name, default width, avoid upscale).
