Fast, compact VS Code status for AI-assisted work:

24w87L~420t G+156−42 9f 🤖 3
  • 24w: words in the selection
  • 87L~420t: lines and estimated tokens in the selected text, or the whole active file when nothing is selected; oversized files show only 87L
  • G+156−42 9f: Git lines added, removed, and files changed
  • 🤖 3: active Codex, Claude Code, Cursor Agent, or Pi sessions in the workspace

Copy locations

The editor context menu and Command Palette provide:

  • Copy Location: copies an absolute file path plus the active line or selected line range, such as /workspace/src/file.ts:123-456.
  • Copy Relative Location: copies the same location relative to its workspace, such as src/file.ts:123-456.

Performance

Editor and Git updates are event-driven and debounced. Git results are cached per repository, only changed repositories are scanned, inactive fallback polling backs off adaptively, and at most two scans run at once. Agent scans never overlap. Active commands stop when VS Code loses focus.

Settings

Setting Default Range
aiStatusbar.gitUpdateIntervalMs 1000 250–60000
aiStatusbar.agentUpdateIntervalMs 5000 1000–60000
aiStatusbar.maximumFullDocumentTokenEstimateCharacters 1000000 0–100000000

Higher update intervals reduce Git and agent polling. Changes apply without reloading VS Code.

The character limit bounds full-document token-estimation work. Estimates are omitted when the file exceeds aiStatusbar.maximumFullDocumentTokenEstimateCharacters; set it to 0 to disable them. Line counts remain visible, and selected-text metrics are always calculated exactly.

Limits

Git and process commands run only in trusted, local-file workspaces. Multi-root workspaces are combined.

The extension uses VS Code's Git API when available. Its fallback scans only top-level workspace folders. Untracked files count as changed files, but not as added lines. Binary files report zero changed lines. Large command output is limited to protect the extension host.

Agent detection uses ps and /proc on Linux, lsof on macOS, and PowerShell on Windows. Processes that cannot be tied to the workspace are ignored.
