Visualize SQL Server stored procedures as interactive control-flow diagrams, right inside VS Code. Part of Arqon - Figma for SQL.
Features
Run "Arqon: Analyze Procedure" on a stored procedure to open one panel with tabs:
- Flow - a layered control-flow diagram (
IF/ELSE,WHILE,TRY/CATCH,EXEC,RETURN,THROW), with hover explanations and click-to-source. - Dependencies - the tables/procedures it reads, writes, calls, creates, or drops.
- Live (DB) - the same, resolved from the live catalog (needs
arqon.connectionString). - Score - an Architecture Score and a list of performance/risk findings.
- Hotspots - those findings overlaid on the flow graph as a heatmap.
Plus, from the same panel:
- Execution Plan - open a
.sqlplanfile or capture an estimated plan from the database (consent-gated), shown as an operator-tree cost heatmap. - What-if simulator - toggle deterministic scenarios (add a supporting index, inline TVFs, materialize a repeated CTE, fix a cardinality spill) and see a re-estimated cost.
- AI Mentor (optional) - plain-language explanations of a finding and a verified suggested fix (the engine re-runs its own detectors on the rewrite). Uses a model you already have via GitHub Copilot (no key), or your own Anthropic / OpenAI-compatible key. Off unless you ask for it.
Local-first & private - analysis runs in a local engine process; your SQL never leaves your machine. The AI Mentor is the only feature that can reach out, and only after explicit consent, with string literals redacted.
Requirements
- .NET 10 runtime on your
PATH(the engine runs asdotnet). Override with thearqon.dotnetPathsetting if needed.
Usage
- Open a
.sqlfile containing a stored procedure. - Run “Arqon: Visualize Procedure Flow” from the Command Palette.
- The flow diagram opens beside the editor. Select a block first to visualize just that part.
Settings
| Setting | Default | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
arqon.dotnetPath |
dotnet |
Path to the dotnet executable that runs the engine. |
arqon.enginePath |
(empty) | Explicit path to Arqon.Host.dll; empty uses the bundled engine. |
arqon.connectionString |
(empty) | SQL Server connection string for the Live (DB) tab (local engine only). |
arqon.aiProvider |
vscode |
AI Mentor model source: vscode (Copilot etc., no key), anthropic, or openai-compatible. Set a key with Arqon: Set AI Provider Key. |
Windows Smart App Control: the bundled engine is not yet code-signed. On the few machines with Smart App Control enabled it may be blocked; the extension will tell you how to allow it. Most machines are unaffected.
See the project README and CONSTITUTION.md for the architecture and roadmap.
