Sounds and animations for typing in VS Code — a port of the Godot editor plugin Godot Fancy Editor Sounds by Aventero.

What it does

  • Code editor sounds — typing (4 rotating key samples), deleting, selecting (pitch rises with selection size and speed), word-select, double-click, select-all, deselect, caret movement, undo/redo, copy, paste, and save.
  • Delete animations — deleted characters break off and tumble away under gravity (they arc out, fall, spin, and fade), and/or drop and fade in place (standard). Both can run together. Indenting lines animates them too.
  • Interface sounds — editor tab switches, terminal open/close, debug start/stop, task success/failure, breakpoints, and scroll ticks.
  • Custom sounds — swap any action's sound for one of the 30 bundled samples or your own wav/mp3/ogg via Fancy Editor Sounds: Change Sound for Action….

How it works

The Windows and macOS packages include a small native audio helper that starts with the extension and exits with it. It is part of the VSIX—there is no separate installer, service, or runtime download. This lets sounds work as soon as VS Code opens without depending on Chromium's webview autoplay state. Linux uses the "Fancy Sounds" view in the Explorer sidebar (Web Audio), which is also the emergency fallback if the packaged helper cannot start.

The Explorer view provides the mute control and status line. Volume is changed only through the fancyEditorSounds.volume setting (there is no slider). Stock native decoding covers the bundled WAV/MP3 sounds. If a custom OGG cannot be decoded by the native helper, Fancy Editor Sounds warns once and uses that action's bundled default sound.

Keybinding note: to hear the copy sound, the extension binds Ctrl+C/Cmd+C (only while an editor has focus) to a command that plays the tick and then performs the normal copy. Disable with fancyEditorSounds.codeEditor.interceptCopyKeybinding if it conflicts.

Settings

Everything lives under fancyEditorSounds.*, and every option has a description in the Settings UI. Highlights: master volume, per-action toggles under codeEditor.sounds.* and interface.sounds.*, animation switches (standardDelete, flyingDelete, showDeletedOnTabbing, maxDeletedCharacters, characterColor), gravity physics (gravity.* — tune how deleted characters launch, fall, and spin), and customSounds. All changes apply instantly.
