A small Positron and Visual Studio Code extension for opening an existing rendered Quarto output without rendering the document again.

Use

  • Open a .qmd document and run Quarto: Open Rendered File from the Command Palette.
  • Or right-click a .qmd file in the Explorer, editor, or editor tab and choose Open Rendered File.

The extension reads the document front matter and the nearest _quarto.yml or _quarto.yaml. It supports:

  • standalone documents;
  • website output in _site;
  • book output in _book;
  • custom project output-dir values;
  • document and format-level output-file values; and
  • multiple output formats (you are prompted when several rendered files exist).

It only opens files that already exist. It never invokes quarto render.

Setting

quartoOpenRendered.openMode controls where the result opens:

  • external (default): use the operating system's default application;
  • editor: ask Positron or VS Code to open the file in an editor.

Install a local build

npm install
npm run package
positron --install-extension quarto-open-rendered-0.1.0.vsix

Use code --install-extension ... instead for Visual Studio Code.

Development

npm install
npm test

Press F5 in Visual Studio Code or Positron to launch an Extension Development Host.
