recall VS Code extension — command vault in the sidebar

recall is a devkitvault open-core product:

  • Free CLI — local vault only (~/.recall/), no account, no cloud
  • Pro / Team — sync local ↔ cloud + Ask (CLI prints suggestions; never runs them)
  • This extension — signs into your cloud vault (Pro/Team). It does not replace the Free local CLI

Same account as recall.devkitvault.com and @devkitvault/recall on npm.

NPM CLI — @devkitvault/recall

Install the same recall command-line tool from npm (package page):

npm install -g @devkitvault/recall

Requires Node.js 18+. Free: save/run locally with no login. Pro: recall sync to match this extension’s cloud vault.

Why use recall in VS Code?

  • Stop re-typing long docker, kubectl, or deploy commands.
  • Cloud vault in the sidebar — templates, snippets, env sets, aliases (Pro).
  • Same Pro vault as the web app and recall sync on other machines.

What you get inside this extension

This extension is a front door to your cloud vault (login required). It talks to the same API as the dashboard. It does not install the CLI and does not read ~/.recall/ on disk — that local file is the Free CLI path.

When you hit Run, the command goes into your integrated terminal.

Vault — your home base in the sidebar

Open the recall activity bar, then the Vault panel (it’s the first one). From the title bar you can:

  • Open Vault — full dashboard experience in a tab, still inside VS Code
  • Refresh — pull the latest lists from the server
  • Login / Logout — session control, right where you expect it

Commands, templates, snippets, env sets, and aliases

From the other panels you can browse, run, copy, and delete — plus edit, rename, or create items where the product supports it. Templates ask you for each {variable} before they run. Snippets can open in a new editor tab or run straight in the terminal. Env sets can paste a ready-made export … chain. Aliases stay short while pointing at a longer saved command.

Groups (Pro)

On a Pro plan you can organize commands into groups and assign a command to a group from its context menu — handy when your vault grows.

Save from real work

Highlight text in an editor or the terminal (or copy first, then run the command) and use Save selection as command — great when you finally got that gnarly one-liner working and never want to lose it.

Status bar

Glance at your plan and how many commands you have saved. A click jumps you into search (or login, if you’re signed out).

The recall CLI — local free, cloud on Pro

Prefer a plain shell? @devkitvault/recall:

npm install -g @devkitvault/recall
recall save "docker compose up -d" -n up -t docker # Free — local only
recall import history -n 20 # pick from shell history
recall run up

# Pro — same cloud vault as this extension
recall auth login
recall sync

Ask (Pro) only lives in the CLI: it prints a suggestion; it never runs it. The extension does not include Ask.

CLI and extension do not shell out to each other. Free CLI = local file. Pro = shared cloud with this extension and the web app.

Do I need the CLI if I already use this extension?

For Free / local-only work: yes — use the CLI (this extension needs a Pro/Team login for the cloud API).

For Pro cloud vault in the editor: the extension is enough. Use the CLI for SSH, CI, import history, Ask, and tab completion.

Getting started (quick)

  1. Install — Search recall in Extensions or open the Marketplace listing.
  2. Pro account — Sign up and upgrade when you want sync + Ask.
  3. Sign in — Activity bar → Vault → Login.
  4. Save / run — Add command, save selection, or use the web dashboard.

Command Palette (recall:)

Press Ctrl+Shift+P (or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS) and type recall: to see everything: login, refresh, search, create flows, edit/rename (with a quick pick when you didn’t start from the tree), and more. If you’re ever stuck, that palette is the fastest map of what the extension can do.

Each panel has its own title bar actions (for example Commands has add and search). Tree rows show inline buttons where VS Code shows them, and almost everything also appears on right-click — edit, rename, delete, pin, assign to group, and so on. You don’t have to memorize shortcuts on day one.

See it in action

Commands sidebar

Browse, run, copy, edit, or delete saved commands from the Commands panel without leaving the editor.

Search from the Command Palette

recall: Search commands — fuzzy find by name or tag, then run or copy.

Save a selection

Highlight text in the editor or terminal → recall: Save selection as command → name/tags → lands in your Pro cloud vault.

Templates with {variables}

Save once, fill prompts at run time:

kubectl logs {pod} -n {namespace} --tail {lines}
         ↓
? pod: my-app-7d9f8c
? namespace: production
? lines: 100
         ↓
kubectl logs my-app-7d9f8c -n production --tail 100

Snippets and env sets

Multi-line snippets open in an editor tab or run in the terminal. Env sets copy or apply export lines to the active terminal.
