VS Code Marketplace Version Open VSX Version

An opinionated, more minimal take on Base16 Default Dark and Light themes for VS Code.

This extension provides the following themes:

  • Base16 Default Dark
  • Base16 Default Light

Third-party Extension Support

The themes also provide palette-aligned colours for the following third-party extensions:

  • Error Lens - inline error, warning, information, and hint decorations, including line and message backgrounds and status bar indicators.
  • SQLTools - current-query highlighting and outline colours.

Development

Install the development dependencies once:

npm install

Fast iteration

Open this repository in VS Code or Cursor and press F5 to start an Extension Development Host. Then use Preferences: Color Theme to select either theme. Changes to the theme files are applied live in the development host.

Local test drive

To install the current working tree into Cursor without publishing or changing the extension version:

npm run install:cursor

For VS Code, use:

npm run install:vscode

These commands build base16-default-themes-local.vsix and force-install it over the currently installed copy. Reload the editor window after each install. Installing from a VSIX disables automatic updates for that extension, so the local build will remain installed during a longer test drive.

To return to the public Cursor release, uninstall the local copy and reinstall by extension ID:

cursor --uninstall-extension ddnomad.vscode-base16-default-themes
cursor --install-extension ddnomad.vscode-base16-default-themes

To create a VSIX package locally:

npm run package:local

Release

Releases are built automatically when a semver tag is pushed. The GitHub Actions workflow validates the tag, checks that it matches package.json, packages a .vsix, and attaches it to a GitHub Release.

  1. Bump version in package.json.
  2. Move entries from [Unreleased] to a new version section in CHANGELOG.md.
  3. Commit and push to main.
  4. Tag the release (the tag must match package.json, with a v prefix):
git tag vX.X.X
git push origin vX.X.X

The workflow runs on tags matching v*.*.* (for example v0.1.0 or v1.0.0-beta.1). If the tag is not valid semver, or its version does not match package.json, the release fails.

To publish to the VS Code Marketplace:

vsce login ddnomad
vsce publish
